In this very polished final chapter of the trilogy, Apu's story evolves from tales of domestic intimacy to his interaction with the grandiose narrative of "the world", where his artistic ambitions, his idealism against the working class reality, and his sweet, clumsy newfound happiness are all swept into the throbbing whirlwind of despair. The concluding notes of acceptance and hope is particularly raw and touching as we witness Apu reconcile with the past he has outgrown, with life and its unavoidable tragic conditions, and with his sensitive, vulnerable, intensely alive "true self".

Who are you?” “I’m your ……friend.”
